Escherichia freundii is a bacterial pathogen recognized as a causative agent of soft rot and spotting in various agricultural crops, specifically impacting citrus fruits. As a member of the Enterobacteriaceae family, this gram-negative bacterium utilizes opportunistic pathways to colonize plant tissues, particularly when the protective barrier of the fruit's peel is compromised.

The primary host range includes citrus varieties such as lemons, oranges, and grapefruits. While the infection can originate in the field, it is most frequently observed during postharvest handling and storage. The bacterium exploits physical wounds or natural openings in the fruit skin to initiate rapid colonization and tissue degradation.

Symptomatology typically starts with the emergence of water-soaked spots on the surface of the fruit. These lesions are often irregular in shape and prone to rapid enlargement. As the infection advances, the infected area undergoes necrotic changes, turning dark in color and soft to the touch, often emitting a distinct foul odor due to the enzymatic breakdown of the parenchyma.

Environmental conditions are the primary drivers of E. freundii development. High humidity levels exceeding 85% and warm temperatures (20–30°C) significantly accelerate the bacterial proliferation. The presence of free water on the fruit surface, often resulting from condensation in poorly ventilated storage facilities, acts as a critical vector for the spread of the disease.

The economic impact of this bacterium is severe, primarily manifesting as substantial postharvest losses. Infected fruit must be discarded, as the damage to the internal pulp and skin integrity renders the produce unmarketable. Failure to contain the infection can result in the rapid spoilage of entire storage lots, causing significant financial strain on producers.

  • Maintaining optimal airflow and climate control in storage units to prevent surface condensation.
