Eurotiomycetidae is a taxonomic subclass of fungi that includes numerous species capable of causing significant agricultural diseases, often manifesting as various types of molds and storage rots. While many of these fungi exist as saprotrophs, they frequently act as opportunistic pathogens, attacking weakened plants or stored agricultural commodities.
These fungi affect a vast range of crops, including cereals, fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants. Vulnerability to infection is significantly increased by harvesting practices, poor storage conditions, and environmental stress that compromises the plant's natural defense mechanisms.
Symptoms typically manifest as surface mycelium growth, forming powdery or velvety patches that range in color from white and green to yellow or blue. Affected areas often show signs of necrosis, softening of plant tissue, and a distinct musty odor. In advanced stages, the structural integrity of the plant or fruit is compromised, leading to complete degradation.
The development and spread of Eurotiomycetidae are primarily driven by humidity levels and temperature fluctuations. Spores are disseminated through air currents, water splashes, and physical contact with contaminated equipment. Once they land on a suitable surface with sufficient moisture, they rapidly germinate and penetrate host tissues, especially if the surface has prior lesions.
The economic impact of these fungi is substantial, resulting in reduced yields and major losses during post-harvest storage. Furthermore, many species in this group produce hazardous mycotoxins that threaten human and animal health. Effective management requires a combination of strategies, such as maintaining low humidity in storage, rigorous field sanitation, and the application of appropriate systemic fungicides to prevent early-stage infection.
