Description
False sting is a non-infectious physiological disorder that affects the fruits of the domestic apple tree. Unlike real insect damage, these spots appear due to metabolic imbalances within the fruit tissues rather than biological infestation by pests or pathogens.
The primary cause of this condition is a localized deficiency of calcium during the critical stages of fruit development. Calcium is essential for maintaining cell wall integrity; when its levels drop, the cells beneath the fruit skin collapse and die, leading to the characteristic dimpled appearance on the surface of the apple.
The symptoms appear as small, slightly sunken depressions on the fruit surface, often with a central necrotic point that mimics an insect puncture. Unlike true stings caused by fruit flies or other insects, there are no channels, tunnels, or larvae found inside the flesh when the apple is cut. The underlying tissue is typically corky and necrotic.
Environmental conditions play a significant role in the progression of this disorder. Irregular irrigation, characterized by dry spells followed by heavy rainfall, disrupts the uptake and translocation of nutrients. Furthermore, excessive nitrogen fertilization promotes vigorous vegetative growth, which competes with developing fruits for available calcium, thereby exacerbating the severity of the symptoms.
The economic impact of false sting is primarily related to the loss of fruit marketability. Affected apples are less attractive to consumers and often have a shorter shelf life due to their susceptibility to secondary storage rots. Effective management involves maintaining a consistent water supply, implementing calcium-based foliar sprays during the growing season, and balancing fertilizer applications to ensure optimal nutrient distribution.
