Description

Fruit russet is a physiological disorder characterized by the development of corky, rough, or net-like tissue on the surface of the fruit skin. While it is not caused by pathogens, it significantly impacts the market value and cosmetic appeal of the fruit.

The disorder primarily affects the domestic apple (Malus domestica). Certain varieties are genetically prone to this condition, especially those that lack sufficient cuticular wax or have a very thin epidermal layer that cannot withstand rapid fruit expansion during the early growth stages.

Symptoms appear as brown, corky patches or networks of lines that develop on the surface of the fruit. This occurs when the skin is injured—either by environmental stress or chemical contact—and the plant initiates a wound-healing process, resulting in the production of suberin and cork cells that replace the normal smooth skin.

The development of russeting is heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high relative humidity, frequent rainfall, or cold temperatures during bloom and the early fruit set period. Rapid expansion of the fruit during these times leads to microscopic skin ruptures, which the plant then seals with corky tissue.

The economic impact is primarily related to the reduction in fruit grade. Fruits affected by russeting have a dull appearance and are prone to increased water loss during storage. The uneven surface can also serve as a site for secondary infections or simply cause the fruit to be downgraded for fresh market consumption.

Management and prevention involve several strategic actions:

  • Selection of resistant or less susceptible cultivars.
  • Avoiding the use of harsh chemical sprays during the sensitive flowering stage.
  • Providing consistent irrigation to avoid sudden growth spurts in the fruit.
  • Utilizing specialized plant growth regulators to stabilize skin cell division.
