Fusarium ear rot is a prevalent fungal disease affecting corn, primarily caused by species within the Fusarium complex, including Gibberella intermedia. This pathogen is globally recognized as a significant threat to maize production, primarily because it colonizes the ears and leads to the accumulation of toxic secondary metabolites known as fumonisins.

The primary host for this pathogen is corn. The infection typically occurs during the flowering stage through the silks or through wounds created by insects such as corn earworms. The fungus is soil-borne and can also overwinter on infected corn debris, making it a persistent challenge for continuous cropping systems in temperate and humid regions.

The symptoms of the disease are characterized by the appearance of a white, salmon-pink, or reddish-brown fungal mycelium on the surface of the kernels. The infection often spreads from the tip of the ear downward. Affected kernels may show "starburst" patterns, become discolored, or appear shriveled. In advanced stages, the entire ear may rot and become brittle.

Environmental conditions are critical for disease development. High humidity and warm temperatures during the silk stage promote the germination of spores and their entry into the ear. Insects play a dual role by both creating physical entry points for the fungus and carrying the spores directly into the protected environment of the corn husk, significantly increasing disease severity.

The economic impact is twofold: yield loss and grain quality degradation. Fumonisins are heat-stable toxins that pose serious health risks to both humans and livestock. Consequently, grain contaminated with these mycotoxins is often rejected at elevators or downgraded, resulting in significant financial losses for farmers who fail to implement proper control measures.

  • Planting hybrids with resistance or tolerance to ear rots.
  • Implementing crop rotation to reduce inoculum pressure from soil debris.
  • Managing insect populations, particularly those that feed on corn ears.
  • Using high-quality, fungicide-treated seeds to ensure vigorous early growth.
  • Promoting rapid crop drying by optimizing planting density and harvest timing.
