Gibberella intermedia

Gibberella intermedia is a pathogenic fungus classified within the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota, and order Hypocreales. Its anamorph, commonly identified as Fusarium proliferatum, is a significant pathogen of worldwide economic importance. It is primarily recognized as an agent responsible for various fusarium-related diseases in a wide range of agricultural crops.

This fungus is responsible for severe diseases including Fusarium head blight, stalk rot, and ear rot in crops such as maize, wheat, and rice. The pathogen's destructive nature is twofold: it physically destroys plant tissues, leading to reduced yields, and biologically contaminates grain with mycotoxins, specifically fumonisins, which pose significant health risks to livestock and humans.

The life cycle of the pathogen involves both sexual (ascospores) and asexual (conidia) stages. The fungus survives unfavorable conditions as mycelium or chlamydospores in soil, crop debris, or infected seeds. During the growing season, moisture and specific temperature conditions trigger the production of spores, which are disseminated by wind or rain splash onto susceptible plant tissues.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the spread of Gibberella intermedia. High humidity and warm temperatures (optimally between 20°C and 30°C) during the anthesis stage of cereals create favorable infection conditions. The fungus effectively utilizes the open florets of grain crops to establish primary infections, eventually spreading throughout the ear.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this pathogen:

• Practicing crop rotation to reduce inoculum levels in the soil.
• Deep plowing to bury infested crop residues.
• Using high-quality, fungicide-treated seeds.
• Applying systemic fungicides at the appropriate growth stage (flowering).
• Selecting resistant or tolerant crop varieties.
