It is recognized globally as a primary causal agent of various agricultural diseases, significantly impacting yield and grain quality.
Diseases and host crops: This pathogen is notorious for causing Fusarium ear rot, stalk rot, and seedling blight. While its primary host is maize (corn), it also infects sorghum, rice, and several small grain cereals. The pathogen is of critical concern due to its ability to produce secondary metabolites, known as fumonisins, which are toxic to humans and livestock.
Biology and life cycle: The fungus survives as mycelium or chlamydospores on crop residues, in the soil, and within seeds.
