Description
Basal stem rot is a destructive plant disease caused by various species of the Ganoderma fungus. This pathogen is a wood-decaying fungus that primarily attacks the root system and the base of the stem, causing internal rot and systemic failure of the plant's vascular tissues.
The disease is most notorious for devastating coconut palm plantations, although it also infects oil palms and numerous other tropical hardwood species. Because the infection starts underground, it is often difficult to detect until the tree is severely compromised.
Symptoms initially manifest as leaf wilting and chlorosis, starting from the lower fronds and moving upward. As the disease progresses, the base of the trunk may show decaying lesions, and the most definitive diagnostic feature is the emergence of bracket-like fruiting bodies (conks) at the base of the infected trunk.
Environmental conditions such as high humidity, poor soil drainage, and warm temperatures significantly promote the development and spread of the disease. The pathogen spreads via mycelial contact between roots in the soil or through airborne spores released from the fungal fruiting bodies during wet conditions.
Management of the disease requires an integrated approach because total eradication is difficult once the soil is contaminated. Key control strategies include:
- Sanitary removal of infected trees, including the entire root mass and stump.
- Disposing of infected woody debris to eliminate the source of inoculum.
- Implementing good drainage practices to prevent waterlogging around the root zone.
- Using preventative fungicidal treatments and monitoring for early signs of fungal growth on trunks.
