Hazelnut Yellows

Description

Hazelnut Yellows is a serious plant disease caused by phytoplasmas, which are specialized bacteria-like pathogens that colonize the phloem tissues of the host. This infection severely disrupts the translocation of nutrients and photosynthates, causing a systemic decline in the vitality of the hazelnut tree.

The disease exclusively affects the hazelnut crop (Corylus avellana). Because the pathogen resides within the vascular system, it causes long-term physiological stress that can eventually lead to the total death of the tree if left unmanaged, posing a significant threat to hazelnut production.

Symptoms typically start with visible yellowing (chlorosis) of the leaves, often accompanied by leaf curling or reduced leaf size. As the disease progresses, the tree displays stunted growth, shortened internodes, and an abnormal proliferation of twigs, often resembling a broom-like structure, which drastically reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant.

The transmission of Hazelnut Yellows primarily occurs through insect vectors, specifically leafhoppers, which feed on the infected phloem and transmit the phytoplasma to healthy trees. Furthermore, the disease is frequently spread through the use of infected nursery stock or grafting with wood taken from symptomatic plants, emphasizing the need for pathogen-free sourcing.

Prevention and control measures are critical as there is currently no curative chemical treatment for phytoplasmas. Farmers should focus on the removal and destruction of infected trees, systematic monitoring of insect populations to manage vector activity, and strict adherence to quarantine protocols to ensure that only certified, disease-free planting material enters the orchard.
