Rice hoja

Description

Rice hoja blanca (white leaf) is a serious viral disease caused by the Rice hoja blanca virus (RHBV). This virus affects the vascular tissue of the host plant, significantly disrupting physiological processes, including nutrient transport and chlorophyll production.

The disease exclusively infects rice (Oryza sativa). It is particularly prevalent in Central and South America as well as the Caribbean. Outbreaks of this disease are known to cause severe yield losses, sometimes resulting in total crop failure if the infection occurs early in the growing season.

Visible symptoms are characterized by the appearance of white or chlorotic longitudinal stripes on the leaves. Infected plants exhibit stunted growth, leaf twisting, and failure to produce healthy panicles. Frequently, the panicles remain upright and empty, significantly reducing both grain quality and quantity.

The virus is transmitted by the delphacid planthopper, Tagosodes orizicolus. The development and spread of the disease are heavily dependent on the population density of this vector. Favorable climatic conditions, such as high humidity and optimal temperatures, facilitate the rapid movement of the virus through rice fields.

Management strategies focus on a multi-pronged approach. The most sustainable method is the deployment of resistant or tolerant rice varieties. Additionally, integrated pest management (IPM) is essential to suppress the population of the vector insect, combined with the destruction of alternative weed hosts and strict adherence to recommended planting windows to minimize exposure to peak vector activity.
