Rice hoja blanca virus (RHBV) is a significant plant pathogen affecting rice cultivation, particularly in the Americas. It is classified under the genus Tenuivirus. The name "hoja blanca," which translates to "white leaf," refers to the characteristic chlorotic streaks that appear on infected rice leaves, often leading to a total bleaching effect.

The virus primarily targets rice (Oryza sativa). Infected plants exhibit reduced height, stunted growth, and frequently fail to produce productive panicles. The resulting panicles, if they form, are often distorted and contain empty or poorly filled grains, leading to drastic reductions in yield and significant quality losses for producers.

The biological cycle of the virus is intricately linked to its vector, the rice delphacid planthopper Tagosodes orizicolus. Transmission is persistent, meaning the virus replicates within the insect. A critical biological feature of this pathogen is transovarial transmission, where the virus is passed from an infected female planthopper to her offspring, ensuring the continued survival of the virus across generations.

Development and spread are strongly influenced by the population dynamics of the vector. Outbreaks typically occur during periods of warm weather and high humidity, which favor the proliferation and movement of Tagosodes orizicolus. Migration of winged insects allows the virus to move rapidly between fields, leading to localized epidemics that can cover large agricultural areas.

Control strategies focus on minimizing vector populations and leveraging genetic resistance. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control:

  • Cultivation of rice varieties genetically resistant to the virus.
