Idriella root rot

Idriella root rot is a serious soil-borne fungal disease caused by the pathogen Idriella lunata. This fungus specifically targets the root system of various plants, leading to severe root decay and the inability of the plant to uptake water and nutrients effectively.

The disease is particularly significant in strawberry cultivation, where Idriella lunata can cause substantial yield losses. By damaging the feeder roots, the fungus compromises the plant's vascular system, eventually leading to stunted growth and sudden wilting of the foliage during the fruiting season.

Symptoms of the infection typically appear as a dark brown to black discoloration of the roots. As the disease progresses, the root cortex decays, and the fibrous root system is destroyed. Affected strawberry plants often show wilting, reduced vigor, and leaf chlorosis, which eventually turns into necrotic patches on the leaves.

The pathogen thrives in cool to moderate temperature ranges combined with high soil moisture levels. Idriella lunata can persist in the soil for several years through resting structures, making it extremely difficult to eradicate once it has established itself in the field or greenhouse environment.

Management and prevention focus on preventing the introduction of the fungus and minimizing conditions that promote its growth.
