Briosia ampelophaga

Description

The disease is caused by the fungus Briosia ampelophaga, an ascomycete pathogen that primarily targets the foliage of various plants. This fungus disrupts normal metabolic processes, specifically photosynthesis, leading to localized necrosis and a significant decline in the overall vigor of the host plant.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are grapevines and strawberries. While it is most frequently observed on leaves, severe outbreaks can impact petioles and tender stems. The infection typically establishes during periods of high humidity and moderate temperatures, which are optimal for the fungus's reproductive cycle.

Clinical symptoms manifest as small, irregular, or circular spots on the leaf surface. Initially appearing pale, these spots gradually turn brown or dark black as the tissue dies. In humid conditions, a visible mold-like layer of spores develops on the underside of the lesions. Infected leaves often become brittle, turn yellow, and drop prematurely.

Development and spread are facilitated by environmental factors such as persistent rainfall and poor air circulation within the plant canopy. The pathogen overwinters on fallen leaves and diseased plant debris, making hygiene a critical factor in disease management. Spores are primarily dispersed through wind, water splashes, and contaminated agricultural tools.

Effective management and prevention strategies include several essential practices:

  • Strict removal and destruction of fallen leaves and infected plant material to eliminate primary inoculum.
  • Implementation of proper pruning techniques to increase canopy ventilation and reduce humidity.
  • Application of protective and systemic fungicides during high-risk periods to inhibit spore germination.
  • Monitoring plant health and maintaining balanced nutrition to improve natural disease resistance.
