Zythia fragariae is a fungal pathogen belonging to the class Dothideomycetes. It is widely recognized in agriculture as a causative agent of leaf spot diseases in various strawberry cultivars (genus Fragaria). This pathogen specializes in attacking leaf tissues, which are critical for the plant's metabolic functions.

The primary symptoms of infection caused by Zythia fragariae include the development of spots on the foliage. Initially appearing as small, reddish-brown lesions, these spots expand over time to develop lighter, often necrotic, centers surrounded by a dark brown or purple margin.
