Description
Cotton leaf crumple is a viral disease caused by the Cotton leaf crumple virus (CLCrV), which belongs to the Geminiviridae family. It is a significant phytosanitary concern for cotton production, as it can cause severe stunting and yield losses in infected fields.
The primary host for this virus is the cotton plant (Gossypium spp.). However, the virus can persist in various weed species, particularly those within the Malvaceae family, which serve as alternate hosts and reservoirs that maintain the infection cycle within agricultural environments.
Typical symptoms include distinct downward curling of leaves, crinkling, and a thickened, leathery texture of the leaf blade. Severely infected plants exhibit shortened internodes, bushy appearance, and overall stunting, which limits the plant's capacity for proper boll formation and maturation.
Transmission occurs exclusively via the sweetpotato whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). The insect acquires the virus while feeding on infected sap and transmits it to healthy cotton plants. Outbreaks are highly correlated with whitefly population density, which thrives in hot and arid weather conditions.
The impact of this disease is significant, resulting in reduced lint yield and lower quality of the cotton crop. Infected plants often abort squares and bolls, leading to sparse and underdeveloped canopy structures that cannot support optimal fiber production.
Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach, emphasizing the control of whitefly populations using targeted insecticides and integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Additionally, managing reservoir weeds around field perimeters and selecting resistant or tolerant cotton cultivars are crucial for minimizing disease impact.
