Description
Cotton leaf curl virus (CLCuV) is a significant plant pathogenic virus belonging to the genus Begomovirus within the Geminiviridae family. It is recognized as one of the most destructive threats to cotton production worldwide, causing severe crop losses and challenging agricultural stability in affected regions.
The virus causes a complex disease known as Cotton Leaf Curl Disease (CLCuD), which affects both wild and cultivated cotton species. Its host range is quite broad, extending to various ornamental and vegetable crops like hibiscus, okra, and tomatoes, which function as alternate hosts between cotton growing seasons.
Transmission occurs exclusively through the silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci). The virus is acquired by the insect during feeding and is transmitted in a persistent, circulative manner. Once the whitefly acquires the virus, it remains a vector for the duration of its life, effectively spreading the pathogen within and between fields.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the epidemiology of the disease. Warm and humid climates provide ideal conditions for the rapid multiplication and migration of the whitefly population. Consequently, high temperatures correlate with increased disease incidence, as the vector becomes more active and the viral replication rate within the host increases.
The economic impact of CLCuV is substantial. Infected plants show symptoms such as upward or downward leaf curling, vein thickening, and stunted growth. The resulting physiological disruption causes square shedding and bolting failure, which drastically reduces both the quality and quantity of the harvest, sometimes leading to total field failure.
