Description

Cotton leaf curl virus (CLCuV) is a significant plant pathogen that causes severe viral disease in cotton plants. It is one of the most economically damaging diseases in cotton-growing regions globally, leading to substantial yield losses and degradation of fiber quality in affected crops.

Taxonomically, the virus is classified within the genus Begomovirus of the Geminiviridae family. It is characterized by small, twinned particles containing single-stranded DNA. This pathogen targets the phloem tissue of the host plant, resulting in systemic infection that affects the entire physiology of the cotton plant.

The primary clinical signs of the disease include the upward or downward curling of leaves, thickening of veins, and the appearance of characteristic leaf-like enations on the undersides of leaves. Severe infections lead to stunting, poor boll formation, and a dramatic reduction in both the quantity and quality of cotton fiber produced.

The biological cycle of the pathogen is strictly dependent on the whitefly, Bemisia tabaci. This insect vector acquires the virus through feeding on infected plants and transmits it to healthy cotton plants via saliva. The virus does not propagate within the host in the absence of this insect vector, making vector control the cornerstone of disease management.

Integrated pest management strategies are essential for controlling the spread of the virus in cotton fields:

  • Cultivating resistant or tolerant cotton varieties to minimize susceptibility.
  • Implementation of strict weed control programs to eliminate viral reservoirs.
  • Application of systemic insecticides to manage whitefly populations effectively.
  • Establishing a closed season for cotton to break the transmission cycle of the virus.
