Choanephora leaf rot is a fungal disease caused by species of the Choanephora genus, primarily Choanephora cucurbitarum. This pathogen is known for its ability to cause rapid decay in plant tissues, often referred to as wet rot. The fungus belongs to the order Mucorales and thrives by aggressively decomposing plant matter under specific environmental conditions.
The host range of this pathogen is quite broad, affecting numerous agricultural and horticultural crops. It frequently infects cucurbits, legumes, peppers, and various beans. Notably, it also impacts food lentils, causing significant damage to the crop canopy, reducing photosynthetic capacity, and ultimately leading to yield loss if left unmanaged.
Symptoms typically begin as water-soaked lesions on the leaves or stems, which enlarge quickly. As the infection advances, the characteristic fuzzy, metallic-looking growth of the fungal sporangia develops on the surface. This growth appears as gray or golden-brown tufts of mycelium. Heavily infected plants may collapse entirely, leading to a blighted appearance of the affected field area.
The development and spread of Choanephora are heavily dependent on environmental factors, specifically high humidity and warm temperatures. Optimal conditions include temperatures between 20°C and 30°C and high moisture levels during the growing season. The pathogen is easily disseminated by splashing water, irrigation, and wind currents, making management challenging in rainy climates.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize the risk of outbreaks. Key strategies include enhancing field drainage to prevent moisture accumulation and ensuring adequate plant spacing to allow for airflow. Chemical control involving specific fungicides can be effective if applied preventatively or upon the first signs of infection. Crop rotation and the prompt destruction of infected plant debris are also crucial to reducing the primary inoculum source in the soil.
