Description

Light leaf spot is a destructive fungal disease caused by Cylindrosporium concentricum (teleomorph: Pyrenopeziza brassicae). It primarily affects Brassica crops, including winter oilseed rape and turnip. As a major pathogen in temperate regions with high rainfall, it poses a significant threat to both yield and the oil quality of rapeseed crops.

The pathogen is an ascomycete fungus that survives in infected crop debris and on volunteer plants. It spreads through both asexual conidia, which are splashed by rain, and sexual ascospores, which can be wind-dispersed over long distances. The infection cycle can occur throughout the growing season, starting from early autumn seedling emergence.

Symptoms typically manifest as small, white to pale-gray spots on the leaves. A distinct feature of this disease is the appearance of tiny black fruiting bodies arranged in concentric circles within the spots. Under favorable conditions, the infection spreads to stems and pods, causing them to crack and potentially leading to the premature shedding of seeds.

The development of light leaf spot is strongly favored by cool, wet weather. Prolonged periods of rainfall and high humidity are critical for the production and dispersal of spores. Consequently, the disease is most prevalent in autumn and spring. If left unmanaged, the pathogen can quickly spread throughout a crop canopy, especially in dense, high-yielding stands.

The economic impact of the disease is substantial, often leading to yield losses of up to 50% in untreated fields. Reduced photosynthetic activity, stunted growth, and pod infection are the primary drivers of yield loss. Additionally, heavy infection at the pod-fill stage significantly decreases seed weight and oil content, impacting the economic returns for farmers.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize the impact of the disease:

  • Implementing a strict crop rotation cycle of at least 3-4 years.
  • Choosing resistant or tolerant varieties provided by seed breeders.
  • Eliminating volunteer Brassica plants that serve as a green bridge for the fungus.
  • Applying targeted fungicidal sprays based on monitoring and local threshold guidelines, particularly during the stem extension and flowering phases.
