The turnip (Brassica rapa L.) is a biennial vegetable crop belonging to the Brassicaceae family. In its first year, it develops a rosette of leaves and a fleshy, edible root, while in the second year, it produces a flowering stalk to bear seeds. Historically, turnips have served as a vital food source for centuries, particularly in temperate regions, where they were a staple before the widespread introduction of the potato.
Originating from Mediterranean and Asian regions, the turnip is now cultivated globally in cool-climate zones. It thrives in conditions with moderate temperatures and long daylight hours. Because of its rapid growth cycle, which allows for harvest within 60 to 80 days, the turnip is an ideal choice for both spring and late summer plantings, providing flexibility in commercial and home garden production.
Effective turnip management requires well-drained, fertile soil with a neutral pH level. The crop is highly sensitive to moisture stress; uneven irrigation often leads to woody, bitter roots and premature bolting.
