Lycogala, commonly referred to as "wolf's milk," is a genus of slime molds (myxomycetes). While often confused with fungal plant diseases, it is scientifically classified as a protist. It behaves as a saprotroph, feeding on decaying organic matter rather than infecting healthy plant tissues. Understanding its role in the ecosystem is crucial for accurate diagnosis in agricultural practice.
The life cycle of Lycogala involves a motile plasmodium phase and a reproductive phase. The reproductive structures, known as sporangia, appear as small, pink or coral-colored globular bodies on rotting wood or damp soil. These structures eventually darken and rupture, releasing millions of microscopic spores into the environment. They thrive in conditions of high humidity, low light, and poor ventilation.
The organism primarily colonizes damp, decaying plant debris, such as old logs, rotting tree bark, or mulch. It does not possess the enzymes necessary to break down healthy plant cell walls, which distinguishes it from actual plant pathogens. However, its presence serves as a bioindicator that the specific area has poor drainage or excessive decaying organic material, which can eventually attract harmful bacteria or fungi.
While Lycogala is not inherently destructive to live crops, its presence can be problematic. A large mass of slime mold can coat the bark of trees or the base of plants, potentially causing minor localized physiological stress by hindering gas exchange. In ornamental gardens or orchards, its appearance is considered unsightly and indicates a need for improved field sanitation and moisture management.
Effective management focuses on physical control rather than chemical application. Since fungicides are generally ineffective against myxomycetes and unnecessary for this non-parasitic organism, the best approach is to modify the environment. This includes removing rotting timber and excess mulch, pruning overgrown vegetation to improve sunlight penetration, and correcting soil drainage issues. By creating an environment that is less humid and more aerated, you naturally eliminate the conditions that favor the development of Lycogala.
