Marasmiellus rot, caused by the fungus Marasmiellus inoderma, is a significant plant disease that primarily impacts banana production in tropical regions. This pathogen acts as a facultative parasite, attacking the vital parts of the plant and hindering its physiological functions.

The primary host for this fungus is the banana plant (Musa spp.), though it has been identified in various other hosts within humid environments. The fungus focuses its attack on the rhizome, roots, and the basal portion of the pseudostem, leading to decay that disrupts the transport of nutrients and water.

Common symptoms include the yellowing and drooping of older leaves, followed by the collapse of the entire plant structure in severe cases. Growers may observe a distinct white mycelial mat on the affected parts, which eventually turns brownish as the tissue becomes necrotic and soft due to the enzymatic activity of the fungus.

Environmental factors are critical for the development of Marasmiellus rot. High levels of humidity, poor soil drainage, and persistent rainfall create ideal conditions for fungal proliferation.
