Microthecium is a genus of ascomycetous fungi that acts as a plant pathogen, affecting a variety of agricultural and horticultural crops. These fungi are characterized by the production of embedded perithecia, which serve as the primary source of inoculum within the plant tissues. The disease typically manifests as a localized infection that can spread rapidly under favourable environmental conditions.

The host range of Microthecium is diverse, encompassing various field crops, vegetables, and ornamental plants. It often attacks plants that are physiologically stressed due to poor soil fertility, waterlogging, or other environmental factors. The fungus can persist in the soil or on decaying organic matter, making it a persistent threat in agricultural systems with limited crop rotation.

Symptoms of Microthecium infection often involve necrotic lesions on the leaves, stems, and sometimes fruit. These spots may be initially discolored and eventually turn dark, harboring the tiny black fruiting bodies of the fungus. Affected tissues typically show signs of chlorosis, premature wilting, and decay, which can eventually lead to tissue death and a significant reduction in plant biomass.

Development and spread of the pathogen are highly dependent on high relative humidity and moderate temperatures. Poor airflow within dense plantings creates an ideal microclimate for sporulation and subsequent infection of healthy tissues. The spores can be disseminated by wind, water splashes during irrigation, or contaminated agricultural tools, facilitating the movement of the fungus across a field.

The economic damage caused by Microthecium includes yield losses, lower product quality, and weakened plant defense mechanisms. Effective management involves integrated strategies:

  • Removal and destruction of crop residues.
  • Optimizing spacing to improve air circulation.
