Microtheliopsis is a genus of fungi recognized primarily as lichenicolous or lichenized organisms that colonize the bark of trees and shrubs. While often considered benign components of the tree micro-ecosystem, in agricultural conditions, they can indicate poor tree vitality or environmental stress, potentially causing physical damage to the bark layers.
The disease is caused by species of the Microtheliopsis genus, which act as surface pathogens or opportunistic invaders. By settling on the bark, these fungi can obstruct the lenticels and create an environment that encourages the colonization of more aggressive secondary pathogens, thereby weakening the overall defense systems of the host plant.
The primary hosts affected by this condition include various fruit trees, such as apples, pears, and some ornamental woody species. Trees in older, unmanaged, or high-humidity orchards are at the greatest risk, as the bark provides a substrate that allows the fungus to persist and spread during periods of high rainfall.
Symptoms of an infestation are characterized by the development of minute, dark, or discolored spots on the bark, which can eventually form patches or a crusty layer. As the colonization progresses, the bark surface may become brittle, showing signs of premature weathering or decay, which affects the tree's physiological exchange with the atmosphere.
