Little leaf is a physiological disorder in plants characterized by the abnormal reduction in leaf size, often accompanied by stunted growth and shortened internodes. This condition is primarily linked to an acute deficiency of essential micronutrients, most notably zinc, which is a crucial component in the synthesis of plant growth regulators such as auxins.

The disorder affects a wide range of horticultural and agricultural crops, including fruit trees like apples and citrus, as well as various vegetable species. Because the plant's metabolic capacity is severely constrained when the leaf area is reduced, the overall photosynthetic potential drops, directly impacting the plant's yield and vigor.

Key symptoms include the development of rosettes of small, deformed leaves at the tips of shoots. Affected leaves often exhibit chlorosis, curling, and a brittle texture. As the disease progresses, the terminal buds may die back, and the plant appears stunted, with a bushy or congested appearance due to the lack of normal shoot elongation.

Environmental conditions play a major role in the manifestation of little leaf. High soil pH (alkaline soils) significantly reduces the bioavailability of zinc, making it impossible for roots to absorb the element. Additionally, cold, wet weather conditions often impede root function, further exacerbating the nutrient uptake issues in sensitive crops.

Management and prevention focus on correcting soil fertility and nutrient status. Regular soil testing is vital to identify pH imbalances. Farmers should utilize foliar applications of zinc-based fertilizers or chelated micronutrients for rapid recovery. Long-term prevention involves proper soil management and balancing fertilization programs to avoid nutrient antagonisms.
