Description

The Microthyriaceae family belongs to the order Microthyriales and comprises fungi characterized by the formation of superficial, shield-like ascomata known as thyriothecia. While many members of this group are strictly saprobic, residing on decaying plant matter, some species behave as plant pathogens, causing various types of leaf spots and surface infections on living vegetation.

These fungi infect a variety of hosts, including ornamental plants, trees, and specific crops found primarily in warm, humid climates. The infection typically targets the leaves and sometimes the stems, where the fungus gains nutrients from the epidermal cells of the host, leading to reduced photosynthetic efficiency and localized tissue necrosis.

Symptoms are predominantly manifested as necrotic spots of various shapes and colors, ranging from brown to black. A key diagnostic feature is the presence of visible, black, flattened, disc-shaped fruiting structures on the surface of these spots. In severe cases, extensive spotting can lead to premature senescence or abscission of the leaves, weakening the overall plant health.

The development and spread of Microthyriaceae are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, specifically high humidity and moderate temperatures. Moisture on the leaf surface is essential for spore germination and colonization. Wind and rain splash act as the primary vectors for dispersal, making dense plantings or orchards with poor canopy air circulation highly susceptible to infection outbreaks.

Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical interventions. Cultural practices such as pruning to improve air circulation, thinning out dense canopies, and the prompt removal and disposal of infected leaf litter are critical for reducing inoculum pressure. In cases of significant infestation, chemical control involving copper-based fungicides or appropriate systemic products can effectively suppress fungal activity and protect new growth.
