Microthyriales is an order of fungi within the class Dothideomycetes that includes various epiphytic and parasitic species. In agronomy, these fungi are recognized as pathogens responsible for specific surface-level leaf spots, often proliferating in tropical or humid temperate zones where they colonize the host's epidermal layers.

The host range for these fungi is quite broad, frequently affecting broad-leaved evergreen trees, shrubs, and certain agricultural crops. Unlike systemic pathogens, Microthyriales typically occupy the surface of the leaf, where they develop shield-like structures known as thyriothecia, which are characteristic of this taxonomic order.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as small, dark, and often circular spots on the foliage. Although the infection is usually superficial, a high density of these fungal structures can interfere with the plant's photosynthetic capability. In severe cases, this leads to chlorosis, premature leaf abscission, and a general decline in the plant's physiological vigor.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of these fungi. They thrive in environments with high relative humidity and consistent moisture on leaf surfaces. Poor airflow within a canopy, often caused by improper planting density or lack of pruning, exacerbates the spread of spores during rain events or dew formation.

Proactive management is the most effective approach for mitigating the impact of Microthyriales. Agronomic strategies should prioritize canopy management to reduce micro-humidity levels. Additionally, sanitizing the growing area by removing infested plant debris and applying preventive fungicide treatments during peak risk periods significantly minimizes the impact of the disease.
