Microthyrium ilicinum is a fungal pathogen belonging to the Ascomycota phylum, primarily known for causing leaf spot diseases in various evergreen shrubs. It is considered a host-specific parasite that thrives by infecting the cuticle and epidermal tissues of the leaves, eventually leading to structural damage and aesthetic degradation.
The primary host for this fungus is the holly tree or shrub (Ilex). While it is often considered a secondary pathogen, under favorable conditions, it can become widespread within a plantation, leading to significant foliage loss. It typically affects older leaves, though younger tissue can also be compromised during periods of high humidity.
Symptoms of an infection include the appearance of tiny, dark, shield-shaped fruiting bodies known as thyriothecia on the leaf surface. As the fungus matures, these structures may cause small localized necrotic spots, leading to yellowing of the surrounding tissue and subsequent defoliation if the infection is severe enough.
The disease cycle is heavily dependent on environmental factors. Excessive rainfall, high humidity, and poor airflow within the plant canopy create the perfect conditions for spore germination and colonization. The pathogen persists through the winter months, primarily in infected fallen leaves or on twigs that have been left on the ground.
