Description
Cereal powdery mildew is a prevalent fungal disease caused by the pathogen Blumeria graminis (formerly Erysiphe graminis). This fungus is an obligate parasite, meaning it requires living host tissue to survive and reproduce throughout the growing season, extracting nutrients via specialized structures called haustoria.
The disease affects all major cereal crops, including wheat, barley, rye, and oats. Infection can occur on any aerial part of the plant, including leaves, leaf sheaths, stems, and ears. Because it is highly host-specific, different forms of the fungus tend to attack different cereal species, though cross-infection can occasionally occur in diverse agricultural landscapes.
The primary symptom is the appearance of white, fluffy, mycelial patches on the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, these patches become more dense and may turn greyish or brownish. Eventually, small black spots known as cleistothecia develop within the mycelium, serving as the overwintering structures that allow the fungus to persist in crop residue.
Mildew thrives in moderate temperatures ranging from 15°C to 20°C and high relative humidity. It is particularly aggressive in dense crop stands where air circulation is restricted and humidity remains trapped. High levels of nitrogen fertilization encourage rapid, succulent growth, which creates an ideal environment for the fungus to establish and spread via wind-borne conidia.
The impact of the disease is significant, as it leads to reduced photosynthetic capacity, premature leaf senescence, and stunted grain development. Severe infections during the tillering and stem elongation stages can lead to substantial yield losses, reduced grain quality, and lower test weights. In extreme cases, the crop may suffer from overall loss of vigor and increased susceptibility to other pathogens.
Effective management strategies include:
- Planting resistant or tolerant cereal cultivars to minimize infection risks.
- Implementing proper crop rotation to break the pathogen's life cycle.
- Eliminating volunteer cereal plants that act as a green bridge for the fungus.
- Avoiding excessive nitrogen application to prevent overly dense, susceptible vegetation.
- Applying systemic fungicides at the early stages of disease development to protect the flag leaf.
