Myrothecium leaf spot is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Myrothecium inundatum. This soil-borne fungus acts as a facultative parasite, capable of infecting various plant tissues when environmental conditions facilitate the transition from saprotrophic to pathogenic survival modes.
The host range for this pathogen is extensive, affecting numerous economic crops including soybeans, cotton, cucurbits, and various ornamental species. It is particularly problematic in greenhouse environments where high humidity and moderate temperatures provide ideal conditions for the rapid multiplication and dissemination of the fungal spores.
Key symptoms include the development of necrotic, often circular or irregular lesions on leaves and stems. As the infection progresses, the lesions typically exhibit distinctive white, cushion-like sporodochia in the center of the necrotic area, which release masses of conidia that serve as the primary source of secondary spread throughout the field or greenhouse.
