Neofusicoccum parvum is a prominent phytopathogenic fungus belonging to the Botryosphaeriaceae family. It is recognized globally as a primary causal agent of botryosphaeria dieback, a complex of diseases that results in the severe degradation and premature death of woody tissues in various perennial plant species.

The host range of this pathogen is remarkably broad. It primarily affects viticulture, contributing significantly to the decline of grapevines. Additionally, it causes severe damage to fruit-bearing trees such as almonds, walnuts, peaches, and citrus, as well as various ornamental trees and forest species. The pathogen's ability to infect many different plants makes it a significant risk factor in agricultural settings.

The symptoms are largely characterized by internal wood necrosis and external cankers. On infected plants, one can observe brown or black streaks within the xylem, which eventually lead to shoot dieback, leaf chlorosis, and wilting. In advanced stages, the fungus kills the cambium, causing the tree or vine to stop growing and eventually collapse entirely as the water-conducting tissues become blocked.

The development and spread of Neofusicoccum parvum are highly dependent on environmental factors. The fungus produces spores that are dispersed by wind and rain splashes, especially under warm and humid conditions. Infection typically occurs through pruning wounds, frost cracks, or other physical injuries to the bark. Once inside, the fungus can reside latently within the plant until physiological stress triggers active disease progression.

Preventative management is crucial, as there is currently no curative chemical treatment for established wood infections. Strategies focus on rigorous sanitation protocols, including the thorough sterilization of pruning equipment to avoid cross-contamination. Furthermore, it is essential to keep plants healthy, remove infected branches promptly to reduce inoculum levels, and seal large pruning wounds to prevent new infection entry points.
