Description
Paramyrothecium roridum is a fungal pathogen responsible for causing necrotic leaf spots and stem rots in a vast range of plant species. As a versatile parasite, it poses a significant threat to both greenhouse horticulture and open-field agriculture, leading to reduced yield quality and plant vitality.
The host range of this pathogen is remarkably broad, affecting various vegetables such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, as well as many ornamental flowering plants. In high-density planting conditions, the fungus can spread rapidly through entire crops, causing substantial economic impact if left untreated during the early stages of the disease.
Symptoms typically begin as small water-soaked spots that progressively turn into dark, necrotic lesions often surrounded by a yellow halo. A definitive diagnostic feature is the presence of white or green cushion-like spore masses (sporodochia) appearing on the surface of these lesions under conditions of high humidity.
Disease development is heavily dependent on moisture. Temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C, combined with high relative humidity or prolonged leaf wetness, create an optimal environment for conidial germination. The pathogen easily spreads via splashing water, contaminated tools, or infested planting material, allowing it to move quickly through a crop canopy.
Management strategies require a multi-faceted approach to limit the inoculum pressure. Preventive measures are crucial and include the following:
- Maintaining optimal spacing to improve air circulation.
- Avoiding overhead irrigation that encourages spore dispersal.
- Sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of infected plant debris.
- Use of labeled fungicides as part of an integrated pest management (IPM) program.
