Penicillium rot is a common fungal disease caused by various species of the Penicillium genus, including Penicillium brevicaule. These fungi are ubiquitous in agricultural environments, acting primarily as opportunistic pathogens that thrive on stored crops, seeds, and root vegetables, especially when those materials are compromised by external factors.

The pathogen attacks a diverse range of crops, including cereals, legumes, and horticultural products. The infection often begins at sites of mechanical injury, such as bruises or cuts sustained during harvest or transport.
