Blue mold is a significant fungal disease caused by the pathogen Penicillium chrysogenum. This mold fungus is a common inhabitant of soil and stored organic matter, often affecting seeds, fruits, and vegetables. In agricultural practice, it is primarily recognized as a post-harvest disease that significantly reduces the quality and quantity of harvested yields.
The disease affects a wide range of crops, including cereals (wheat, corn, barley), legumes, and various orchard crops. It is particularly destructive during the storage phase, where it colonizes products with high moisture content. Even minor mechanical injuries on the surface of fruits or grains during harvesting create entry points for the fungal spores to germinate and spread rapidly throughout the storage unit.
The primary symptom of the infection is the development of a characteristic dusty, blue-green to olive-colored velvety mycelial mat. As the fungus progresses, it produces secondary metabolites and mycotoxins, which lead to tissue decay, discoloration, and an unpleasant musty odor. In stored grains, this often results in clumping, heating of the grain mass, and a drastic loss of germination ability.
Favorable conditions for the development of Penicillium chrysogenum include high relative humidity (above 75%) and warm temperatures. The fungus is an opportunistic saprophyte that exploits compromised or improperly stored plant materials. Spores are easily disseminated by air currents, making sanitation in storage facilities essential to preventing widespread outbreaks and cross-contamination.
