It is a cosmopolitan microorganism that thrives in both soil and storage environments. Its ability to produce a diverse range of enzymes allows it to degrade complex organic substrates, making it a major concern for post-harvest loss management.
This pathogen infects a wide variety of agricultural crops, including cereals, legumes, and oilseeds. It is particularly notorious for causing mold in stored fruits like apples and pears, as well as root crops. The fungus acts as a secondary pathogen, often colonizing tissues that have been weakened by mechanical injury, moisture stress, or improper handling after harvesting.
The characteristic symptom of Penicillium decumbens infection is the formation of a dense, powdery mold on the surface of the plant material. The colony initially appears white, eventually developing a distinct olive-green or blue-green color as it produces vast amounts of conidia. Affected plant tissues undergo rapid softening, discoloration, and emit a distinct, unpleasant musty odor.
The development of this fungus is primarily governed by environmental conditions, specifically moisture and temperature.
