Description
The disease is caused by the fungus Penicillium glabrum, a common mold that thrives in environments where agricultural produce is stored. As an opportunistic pathogen, it predominantly acts as a post-harvest nuisance, significantly affecting the quality and marketability of various fruits, vegetables, and grains.
This fungus targets a wide range of host plants, including pome fruits, citrus, and various storage crops. The infection mechanism typically begins at the point of entry through skin wounds, cuts, or bruises sustained during the harvesting process or subsequent handling. Once established, the fungus rapidly degrades plant tissues.
Clinical signs of the infection include the appearance of soft, sunken lesions on the surface of the produce. Within a few days, these spots become covered in a distinctive, felt-like mass of conidiophores and spores, typically presenting in shades of blue-green or grey-green. The inner tissue becomes mushy, and a distinct musty odor becomes noticeable.
Conditions favoring the proliferation of Penicillium glabrum include high ambient humidity and inadequate aeration within storage facilities. Unlike some specialized pathogens, this fungus can tolerate cool temperatures, making it a persistent challenge even in refrigerated storage units if the airflow is stagnant or restricted.
Preventative measures are essential for successful management of this disease. These include proper sanitation of crates and warehouse surfaces, maintaining optimal climate conditions (controlled humidity and low temperature), and careful handling to minimize mechanical damage to crops. Additionally, prompt removal of any decaying fruits is crucial to prevent the spread of spores, which are highly contagious to neighboring healthy produce.
