Description
The disease is caused by the fungus Penicillium verruculosum, which is a common post-harvest and field pathogen. This mold is recognized for its ability to produce various enzymes that break down plant tissues, contributing to the rapid degradation of stored agricultural products and standing crops that are physiologically weak.
The fungus affects a diverse range of crops, including cereals, oilseeds, legumes, and various fruits. It is particularly problematic in grain storage facilities where inadequate ventilation or moisture control allows the pathogen to establish colonies, potentially causing significant economic losses to farmers and distributors.
Symptoms of the infection typically appear as a characteristic blue-green, powdery mold growth on the surface of seeds, grains, or fruit skins. As the infection progresses, the tissues underneath the mold mycelium soften, darken, and produce a distinct musty odor, rendering the produce unfit for consumption or processing.
The development of Penicillium verruculosum is strongly favored by high relative humidity (above 75%) and moderate to warm temperatures. In the field, the pathogen often enters through wounds caused by insect feeding, hail damage, or mechanical harvesting injuries, allowing the fungus to penetrate the protective layers of the plants.
The danger of this fungus lies in its ability to secrete secondary metabolites, known as mycotoxins, which can be harmful if ingested. Furthermore, infected seeds often exhibit poor germination rates and stunted early growth, which negatively impacts the yield potential of the subsequent season if infested seed lots are used without proper treatment.
