Pestalotia fruit rot (Pestalotia spp.) is a fungal disease caused by various species of the Pestalotia fungus. It is recognized as a significant threat in agricultural production, particularly affecting various berry crops through the development of necrotic lesions and subsequent rotting of tissues.

The primary hosts for this pathogen include strawberries and cranberries, where it can infect blossoms, foliage, and mature fruits. The disease significantly reduces both the yield potential and the post-harvest shelf life of the berries, often leading to total loss in highly infected areas.

Symptoms of the infection usually appear as brown or dark-colored spots on the leaves and stems. As the disease progresses to the fruits, small watery lesions form, which eventually become covered with dense, dark-colored spore-bearing structures known as acervuli. This is a definitive diagnostic sign of the pathogen.

The development of the fungus is heavily favored by prolonged periods of high humidity, rainfall, and moderate temperatures. The pathogen survives between growing seasons in infected plant debris left in the field, as well as on various tools and equipment, facilitating its transmission throughout the planting site.
