The disease is caused by the fungus Phaeotrichoconis crotalariae, a mycelial pathogen belonging to the class Ascomycetes. This disease primarily affects the aerial parts of plants, causing necrotic processes in the tissues of leaves, stems, and occasionally fruits. The fungus survives as mycelium in infected plant debris, transitioning to active parasitism when environmental conditions become favorable for growth.

The primary hosts for this fungus include various cereal crops, particularly rice, as well as several legumes and weeds. In agroecosystems, the pathogen can spread from weeds to cultivated crops, posing a significant risk to farming operations.
