The fungus Trichaptum abietinum, commonly known as the violet-pored bracket fungus, is a basidiomycete that causes pitted sap rot. This disease primarily targets the sapwood of conifers, leading to the rapid decay of wood structure. By decomposing both cellulose and lignin, the pathogen significantly reduces the durability and structural integrity of the affected timber.

This fungus predominantly affects a wide range of coniferous species, including spruce, pine, and fir. Notably, it frequently attacks Douglas Fir, particularly when these trees have been weakened by environmental stress, windthrow, or previous insect damage. The infection starts when airborne basidiospores land on exposed wood surfaces, such as broken branches or trunk wounds.

Symptomatic recognition involves observing the sporocarps on the bark, which appear as small, thin, leathery brackets often arranged in clusters. Internally, the wood displays a distinctive pitted appearance with bleached areas and localized pockets of decay. These pits are often filled with a white, fibrous mass of mycelium, making the wood appear mottled and brittle upon closer inspection.

The development of pitted sap rot is highly dependent on environmental moisture levels. The fungus thrives in cool, humid conditions, making it particularly prevalent in forest stands with dense canopies or poorly managed logging sites. The rapid spread of spores via wind ensures that any susceptible tree or decaying log in the vicinity can serve as a new host for the pathogen.

Management strategies focus on silvicultural hygiene to minimize host availability. Key practices include the timely removal of windthrown trees, thinning of overcrowded stands, and strict inventory control of stored logs. Ensuring that timber is stored in well-ventilated, dry areas significantly inhibits the growth of the fungus, preventing the economic losses associated with sap rot degradation.
