Protomyces gravidus is a pathogenic fungus known to cause galls on ragweed species, particularly common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia). This fungus acts as a natural antagonist to one of the most invasive and allergenic weeds worldwide. Its lifecycle is tightly synchronized with the development of its host plant, making it a subject of interest in ecological weed management.

The infection process begins when fungal spores penetrate the tissues of the ragweed plant. Once established, the fungus triggers the development of tumor-like growths, known as galls, on stems, petioles, and leaf veins. These structures are composed of hypertrophied plant cells that effectively hijack the plant's resources to support fungal growth.

Symptoms of the disease are characterized by visible swellings or galls that appear green or yellowish initially, eventually turning brown as the internal tissue necrosis progresses. These galls interfere with the host plant's vascular system, causing stunted growth, reduced biomass, and a significant decrease in the production of viable seeds, thereby lowering the population density of the weed.
