The Pseudeurotiaceae family comprises a group of ascomycetous fungi that are increasingly recognized as important opportunistic pathogens in agricultural settings. While many species exist as soil saprotrophs, they can transition to pathogenic behavior, causing significant damage to crops that are already stressed or improperly stored.
The primary causal agents belong to the genus Pseudeurotium. These fungi are characterized by the production of cleistothecia and cause various forms of rot and mold growth. The disease is primarily a post-harvest and pre-harvest threat that develops rapidly in environments with high relative humidity and poor air circulation.
This group of fungi affects a wide variety of crops, including cereals, tubers, and various fruits. Vegetables such as onions and potatoes are particularly susceptible if stored under inadequate conditions. The fungus thrives where the protective barriers of the plant tissue have been breached, allowing for rapid colonization of the inner layers.
Typical symptoms include the development of a mycelial mat on the surface of the plant tissue, which can range in color from white to grey or brown. This is often accompanied by soft rot and a distinct musty odor. If left unchecked, the fungus leads to the total decomposition of the affected plant parts, rendering the harvest unsellable.
