Pseudeurotium is a genus of ascomycetous fungi that act as causal agents of mold infections in various plant species. These microorganisms are commonly found in soil and on decaying plant debris, where they typically behave as saprotrophs but can easily turn into opportunistic pathogens when plant tissues are weakened or stressed.
A wide range of crops is susceptible to Pseudeurotium, with seeds during storage and young seedlings being the most vulnerable. It also frequently affects horticultural products post-harvest, leading to significant losses in quality and shelf life if proper environmental controls are not maintained during processing and transport.
Symptoms of the infection typically include the development of fungal mycelium mats, which may appear white to yellowish or brownish. As the infection progresses, the fungus produces small fruiting bodies known as cleistothecia. Infected tissues often become softened, lose their structural integrity, and emit a musty odor as enzymes break down the plant cell walls.
The development of this fungus is primarily driven by high humidity (usually exceeding 80%) and warm temperatures. Poor ventilation and the formation of condensation on surfaces act as catalysts for spore germination and rapid mycelial spread, particularly in dense crop stands or enclosed storage facilities where air exchange is restricted.
Effective management strategies rely on rigorous sanitation and the maintenance of dry conditions during storage. Preventive measures include the application of fungicide seed treatments to minimize initial infection, proper crop rotation to break the disease cycle, and the deep incorporation of harvest residues to reduce the inoculum load present in the field soil.
