The fungus Pseudocercospora protearum is a specialized pathogen known for causing significant foliage damage in various Protea species. As a leaf spot disease, it primarily affects the physiological health of the plant by colonizing the leaf tissue, which reduces the overall photosynthetic capacity of the host.
This pathogen specifically targets members of the Proteaceae family. While it occurs in various climates, plants cultivated in high-humidity environments, such as nurseries or glasshouses, are particularly susceptible to infection. Once the fungus establishes itself, it can spread rapidly throughout a collection if environmental conditions are not managed.
Initial symptoms are characterized by small, circular lesions on the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, often turning dark brown or black with a distinct necrotic center. In humid conditions, mycelial growth and conidia may be visible on the underside of the leaves, confirming the presence of the pathogen.
