Description
The causative agent of this disease is the oomycete Pythium aphanidermatum, a destructive soil-borne pathogen that causes watery rot of roots and the basal stem area. Although often classified with fungi, it is technically an oomycete, and it acts as an aggressive parasite capable of rapidly destroying seedlings and established plants under high-moisture conditions.
This pathogen has a wide host range, affecting various agricultural crops. It is particularly problematic for cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, and numerous ornamental plants. The disease is most devastating in greenhouse environments, especially in hydroponic systems or soil substrates that lack proper drainage and aeration.
Symptoms of the infection include softening and darkening of the root system, which takes on a characteristic water-soaked, mushy appearance. Early stages involve the browning of root tips, with the rot rapidly progressing upward, causing the plant to wilt even if the soil remains moist. Growth becomes severely stunted, and foliage often turns yellow and collapses prematurely.
The development of Pythium aphanidermatum is favored by warm temperatures, typically ranging between 25°C and 35°C, and prolonged high moisture levels. The pathogen spreads through infested soil, contaminated water, dirty tools, and irrigation equipment. In hydroponic setups, zoospores move easily through recirculating nutrient solutions, leading to systemic infections.
Effective management and prevention strategies are essential for crop protection. Growers should focus on sanitation, such as disinfecting tools and greenhouse structures between crops, and ensuring optimal soil aeration. Key preventative measures include:
- Maintaining appropriate temperatures to discourage pathogen growth.
- Using high-quality, sterile growing media.
- Implementing biological controls, such as beneficial Trichoderma species.
- Ensuring proper drainage to prevent waterlogging.
- Utilizing targeted fungicides when early signs of infection are detected.
