Mesocriconema xenoplax is a species of ectoparasitic nematode belonging to the family Criconematidae, commonly referred to as the ring nematode. As a microscopic plant pathogen within the phylum Nematoda, it acts as an obligate parasite, feeding exclusively on root epidermal and cortical cells. Its feeding activity causes direct mechanical damage and creates pathways for secondary infection by soil-borne pathogens.
This nematode is a significant concern for various perennial crops, including peaches, nectarines, plums, cherries, and grapevines. Infestations lead to a condition often described as "orchard replant disease" or general decline, characterized by stunted growth, sparse foliage, and reduced yields. The damage is often cumulative, weakening the tree's overall vigor over several seasons.
The life cycle of Mesocriconema xenoplax occurs entirely within the soil environment. Adults and juveniles possess a characteristic ringed cuticle that aids in movement through soil pore spaces.
