Ringspot is a common viral disease that affects a diverse range of crops, characterized by the formation of necrotic or chlorotic rings on plant tissues. It is caused by various viruses, including species from the Tobravirus and Nepovirus genera, which interfere with the plant’s metabolism and structural integrity.

The disease impacts a wide variety of plants, including winter oilseed rape, turnips, dahlias, hops, sweet potatoes, radish, sugar cane, and winter wheat. While the symptoms may vary depending on the host plant, the disease consistently leads to reduced photosynthetic capacity and diminished commercial quality of the produce.

Typical symptoms are highly recognizable: circular, target-like spots appear on leaves, stems, and fruits. These necrotic spots can merge over time, leading to tissue death (necrosis) and eventually causing premature leaf drop. In tuberous crops like sweet potato, ringspot can manifest as surface pitting or internal corky damage, rendering the crop unmarketable.

The development and transmission of ringspot are heavily dependent on environmental conditions and the presence of vectors. Soil-borne nematodes often serve as the primary carriers for these viruses, particularly in cool, moist soil environments. Insects like aphids and thrips can also facilitate transmission in greenhouses and open fields by moving from infected weeds or neighboring crops.

Management and prevention focus on eliminating the source of infection. Key strategies include the use of virus-free certified seed, implementing strict weed control to remove alternate hosts, and treating the soil for nematode populations. Crop rotation with non-susceptible species is essential to break the life cycle of the pathogen and protect the long-term health of agricultural land.
