Root smallpox disease, commonly identified as a form of microbial rot, is a significant pathological condition affecting cassava (Manihot esculenta). The disease is primarily caused by soil-borne bacteria, most notably species of Erwinia, which invade the root tissue through wounds or lesions, often created by soil pests or cultural operations.
The characteristic symptoms begin as small, sunken spots on the epidermis of the storage roots, resembling smallpox marks. As the infection progresses, these areas penetrate deeper into the flesh, leading to the development of soft, watery, and often malodorous decay. The internal tissue typically turns dark or discolored, causing the total breakdown of the root structure.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of the pathogen. High soil moisture content combined with poor drainage is the primary trigger for the onset of the disease. Warm, humid conditions facilitate the rapid multiplication of bacteria, making waterlogged fields particularly susceptible to outbreaks during the rainy season.

Root smallpox causes heavy post-harvest and pre-harvest losses, significantly reducing the starch quality and nutritional value of the cassava tubers. When the root rot occurs on a large scale, it can destroy a major portion of the annual yield, severely impacting food security in regions dependent on this crop.
