Description
Microbial rotting is a generic term for plant diseases caused by phytopathogenic bacteria, primarily belonging to the genera Pectobacterium and Dickeya. Taxonomically, these are bacteria that thrive by breaking down plant tissues through the secretion of powerful extracellular enzymes, leading to total tissue degradation.
These pathogens affect a vast range of agricultural crops, particularly those with high moisture content. Common hosts include potato tubers, onions, carrots, cabbages, and various solanaceous crops. The disease can occur both in the field during the growing season and, more destructively, in storage facilities where it spreads rapidly between healthy and infected produce.
The biology of these pathogens is characterized by their ability to produce pectinases, which macerate the middle lamellae of plant cells. The life cycle involves survival in soil, crop debris, and plant-parasitic insects, which often act as vectors for the disease. Once the bacteria enter the plant through wounds, they multiply exponentially under favorable conditions.
Development and spread are favored by high humidity, poor ventilation, and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C. Mechanical damage caused by harvesting, handling, or pest activity is the primary factor that facilitates the entry of these bacteria into the host tissue, leading to the rapid manifestation of soft rot symptoms.
The economic impact of microbial rotting is significant, causing severe post-harvest losses and making the affected crops unsuitable for market. Effective control strategies include:
- Implementing strict crop rotation practices.
- Careful harvesting to minimize mechanical damage to the crops.
- Ensuring proper ventilation and storage conditions (low temperature and humidity).
- Sanitizing storage facilities and equipment before use.
- Managing insect populations that damage plant surfaces.
