Rose fomes rot is a forest pathology caused by the fungus Fomitopsis cajanderi. This pathogen is a wood-decaying fungus that induces brown cubical rot. It predominantly attacks the heartwood of conifers, breaking down cellulose and leaving behind the lignin, which results in the wood losing its structural integrity and becoming brittle.

The disease primarily affects various conifer species, with the Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) being a notable host. It is frequently observed in mature forest stands where trees may have sustained prior physical damage. While it prefers living hosts, it can also persist in fallen logs and stumps, acting as a reservoir for further infection.

The most visible symptoms include the appearance of perennial conks (fruiting bodies) on the trunk, which are characterized by their distinct pinkish-tan or rose-colored undersides. Internally, the wood undergoes a transformation: it becomes reddish-brown and displays a checkerboard-like pattern of cracking, often called cubical rot, which is a hallmark of this fungal infection.

Development of the fungus is favored by moist environmental conditions and the presence of entry points such as broken branches, frost cracks, or fire scars. Spores are released from the fruiting bodies and spread via wind to new wounds on susceptible trees. The fungal mycelium spreads slowly through the heartwood, weakening the tree over many years.
